Meet the Maker - Yosef Salih Murad
Posted on 13 Oct 06:00
This week we speak with Yosef about his collection' Irregular Regularity which comprises of a series of extraordinary brooches. Each one is inspired by the cultural and symbolic role of the Persian carpet, described by Yosef as 'a space for rest, nourishment, and storytelling. Through my work, I aim to translate this sense of communal gathering into tangible forms. I hope those who wear my pieces carry with them a quiet invitation for dialogue, however brief, sparking moments of connection.'
Yosef has been chosen to receive the Diana Porter New Designers Award. We chose his collection for its originality. The combination of great design and links to his heritage made his work very interesting and stood out to us. The attention to detail and exquisite quality of making are very impressive and its clear that he really has a passion and enthusiasm for his art. Yosef intends to use the award to develop his ideas and we are excited to see where he will go from here.

Who inspires you the most?
My Cultural heritage inform and reflect on a lot of my decision making regarding my design process.
Is there a favourite project or assignment from your course that inspired you or proved pivotal to your final collection?
Design Domain was an expressive section to our degree, I explored and found that a mirror helped creating my designs helping me develop my degree show collection.
How do you work - Please can you tell us a little bit about your creative process?
I enjoy working in a dark space away from distractions, not noticing the sun setting helps lose track of the time.
Sounds of the Studio - what are you listening to? We’d love to hear about podcasts recommendations/ studio playlists/ the sounds that motivate you?
I enjoy the sound of rain or the birds so an open window is ideal.
