The Remodelling Process

Consultation & Design | Diana Porter Jewellery
Step 1

Consultation & Design

We begin by inviting you to bring the items you would like to reuse and sitting down for a consultation with one of our remodelling specialists. This is a wonderful opportunity to sketch out some ideas and draw inspiration from the designs we have in the gallery.

If you have stones that are of sentimental value or from another piece, we can work with you to incorporate these into the design, combing several pieces to create something special and unique.

During your consultation, we will provide free quotes with no obligation to proceed with a purchase.

Step 2

Design Development

Once your design is confirmed we begin by carefully dismantling your jewellery. Our team will carefully remove any stones, inspecting each one to determine if they can be reused in your new creation. We will also weigh the remaining metals and conduct any necessary tests on the jewellery to provide you with an accurate final quote for your bespoke piece.

Once approved by you, we will then create a wax model of your design which costs £100 and is deductible from the final costs if decide to go ahead. This technique allows you to view the design in 3D and make any necessary adjustments. This process takes around 2 weeks to complete.

Step 3

Creating your Repurposed Jewellery

Our bespoke jewellery is hand crafted in Bristol using the lost wax casting method. This traditional jewellery making technique involves creating a wax model of the intended design and casting it in precious metals.

Your bespoke wax model is placed into a separate, individual casting mould, where the model is firstly heated and burnt away leaving the silhouette, which is then filled with molten metal creating a replica in solid gold. A separate crucible is used to melt and pour your gold.

Once poured, our team of craftspeople will then texture your remodelled piece ready for setting and finishing.

Step 4

Your New Jewellery

Once the casting returns, it is hallmarked at the Assay office. We then specially set any stones you’ve chosen to use and hand finish your jewellery in our Bristol Workshop. Your special jewellery will then be ready to collect

The remodelling process takes around 4-6 weeks from design confirmation to completion, depending on the complexity of the design, however, please do let us know of any deadlines at the start and we can prioritise work accordingly and advise you on what is achievable within your timeframe.

“I had my late Grandma's jewellery transformed into my wedding band, and the quality and craftsmanship were outstanding, making me feel completely at ease during the process. I now have a beautiful ring that preserves its sentimental value, and I'm grateful to have shared this experience with Diana Porter.”

How much does jewellery remodelling cost?

The price for remodelling depends entirely on the complexity of the design and the materials used and we do not have a minimum charge for this service. There are several elements that are considered in the final total including:

  • The type, size and shape of any stones that are to be used.
  • Labour costs for time taken dismantling and testing, as well as the actual making.
  • Hallmarking the finished piece.
What other costs are involved in remodelling?

Once you have chosen a design, we charge £100 for a wax model to cover our time. However, this is deductible from the final total if you do decide to go ahead.

If your jewellery is not hallmarked there will be a £5 charge per item as it will need to be tested to confirm the carat.

Do you offer Finance options?

Yes, We are pleased to be able to offer Own Art finance on remodelling services.

Own Art interest free loans allow you to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,500 repayable over 10 months.

How long does the jewellery reworking process take?

After the initial consultation, dismantling, checking the stones and metals and creating a wax model takes approximately 2 weeks to complete.

Further adjustments to the design will add time to this.

Once a design is confirmed this will take approximate 4-6 weeks to complete depending on the complexity of the design.

If you do have a deadline, please let us know at the start and we can prioritise work accordingly and advise you on what is achievable within your timeframe.

What is the wax model process?

The wax model is a pre-production version of the finished piece. After you tried on the wax casting, it is still possible to make further changes at this stage. If you are not satisfied with the appearance and wish to refine the design further, this is the time to iron out the final details. The wax model cost £100 and this is deducted from your final total if you decided to go ahead with our design.

Can I use a mixture of metals?

Mixed colours of gold can be used, often with beautiful results. This will create a unique colour and the results can be varied.

Similarly, you are able to mix different carats of gold together, however, this will alter the final carat. This will be hallmarked at an Assay office, at the highest possible grade.

In the UK, gold carats are graded in 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct and 24ct.

This isn’t always an exacting science and customers should be aware that the final grade of carat cannot always be predicted.

Are there any restrictions to what I can use?

Unfortunately, chains are often unusable due to their high solder content. Please feel free to contact us for more details.

Gold plated jewellery cannot be used.

Sometimes older stones need to be repolished and this is a service we can offer at an additional fee.

Sometimes stones are softer or may have damage if they are antique or well-worn which determines if we can work with them. We will advise you on their suitability and can suggest alternatives.

What happens if i do not have enough gold?

We can provide the extra gold as needed; we will provide you for a quote beforehand.

There is approximately 5% of the total weight lost through the casting process so this will need to be accounted for in the total weight required.

If you have any gold remaining you can choose to scrap this gold and we will deduct this value from your final total. Alternatively, we can return the golden ‘nugget’ to you.
