Molly Dodd To create these earrings, I drew inspiration from Banksy’s “Girl with a Pierced Eardrum”, a graffiti work situated on Bristol’s harbourside docks. Referencing both Banksy’s portrait and Johannes Vermeer’s iconic “Girl with a Pearl Earring”, the piece explores the relationship between contemporary street art and classical painting.

To create these earrings, I drew inspiration from Banksy’s “Girl with a Pierced Eardrum”, a graffiti work situated on Bristol’s harbourside docks. Referencing both Banksy’s portrait and Johannes Vermeer’s iconic “Girl with a Pearl Earring”, the piece explores the relationship between contemporary street art and classical painting.
Labradorite stones were selected for their shifting appearance; although dark grey at first glance, they reveal flashes of iridescent blue when they catch the light, echoing the rich blue tones found in Vermeer’s painting. The sand-cast silver elements reference the rough texture of the dockside wall onto which Banksy stencilled his image, bringing traces of the urban environment into the work. Freshwater pearls complete the composition, serving as a direct connection to Vermeer’s original pearl earring and reinforcing the dialogue between historical and contemporary forms of artistic expression.
