Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold

In February 2011 an official Fairtrade and Fairmined gold certification dual label was launched. This was the result of many years' work by the Fairtrade Foundation together with ARM (Alliance for Responsible Mining.)

From September 2011 Diana Porter is delighted to be able to offer customers Fairtrade and Fairmined gold - an option for those looking for an ethical choice.

To commemorate the accreditation of Diana Porter by the Fairtrade Foundation and celebrate this positive progress in the British jewellery industry, Diana Porter has designed and made a special 8 piece spinning ring: The etching reads 'fairmind' in relief lettering across the 8 pieces and the jumble of marks when the ring is spun represents the confusion surrounding the mining process and the difficulty in obtaining traceable ethical metals.

What is Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold?

A unique partnership, Fairtrade and Fairmined gold certification is the result of a joint effort between Fairtrade International (FLO) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), which combined their expertise to enable artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) to improve their livelihoods.
The two organisations have developed a set of standards for responsible mining, which the miners have to fulfil in order to get certified. Achieving the certification means that the miners:
  • Receive a guaranteed Fairtrade Minimum Price for their gold: This is set at 95% of the London Bullion Market Association's (LBMA'S), fixing at the FOB export point
  • Receive a Fairtrade premium payment, which is democratically reinvested in community projects and improving miners' operations. This is calculated as 10% of the applicable LBMA fixing
  • For Ecological Gold (gold extracted without the use of chemicals) an additional 5% is applicable to the LBMA fixing
  • Development of long term business relations with their commercial partners

Fulfilling the Fairtrade and Fairmined standard means that certified miners:
  • Have developed democratic and accountable organisations and formalised chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide, used in the gold recovery process
  • Are respectful with their environment
  • Recognize the rights of women miners
All Fairtrade and Fairmined mines will be audited by the independent, international certification body FLO-CERT to ensure they are complying with the standards.
